March Madness - Not So 'Mad'
We're to the Elite Eight in March Madness (update... no we're not) and I think it's safe to say that my dice rolling experiment was a success! If by 'success' you read: "a complete and utter failure".In our family standings, with 12 participants, I'm in a proud 11th place with only 31 points, 26 correct guesses, and a maximum correct number of 32 and a maximum possible score of 103. Out of the eight teams still in the tournament, I only have two of them in my bracket.
My only hope of having any sort of decent score is to have Duke and West Virginia do well, with Duke taking it all the way.
This has been an interesting exercise, it was also interesting to track down a binomail distribution calculator which helped me calculate the odds of different dice rolls working out. For example, while my bracket had Vermont beating Syracuse in round 1, it turns out that with my method of dice rolling, there was only an 8.8% chance of getting that roll (I had known the probability was low, but it was nice to be able to actually calculate it). In other words, the dice hate me - maybe I should have had my good friend Renee roll the dice for me, she's got incredible luck with dice rolls.
Anyway, we'll see how the rest of the tournament goes, but I don't hold much hope at this point of beating my brothers. Oh well, I'll have to come up with a still-random, but more successful method for next year.

Yeah, not to get technical or anything... but we're not to the 8 yet. The sweet 16 starts this Thursday... then we play the 8. Woot woot, I love college ball!
And yeah, you're a geek :) Who uses a binomial distribution to fill out their bracket? Oh yeah... you do :)
That's awesome... shows how much I'm actually following the games and the tournament. I was looking at my brackets and noticed we had 8 games... but 8 games does not equal 8 teams.
Maybe the guy using mathematics to fill out his brackets should learn how to do math.
Hahaha, you crack me up! I needed a laugh this morning. So glad you could provide it! 8 games = 16 teams. I still think it's awesome you filled out a bracket... apparently without any idea of what's actually going on in college ball. Just curious... who did you (or your binomial distribution) pick to win it all?
I'm blaming all picks on the dice rolls... I wouldn't be foolish enough to take credit for these terrible picks.
I've got Duke going all the way. I'm torn on this because it'd be nice to at least get a half-decent score from my bracket, but I also have to recognize that my family is inherently a UNC family, and thus I have to root for Duke to lose.
Lol. I love Duke. One of my all-time favorite teams. So of course, I am rooting for them. Them and Syracuse. Go Orange! And Blue Devils!
No, you don't root for Duke to lose. Even though we're UNC fans - if we can't have them, then at least we need another NC team. (but don't tell Thayne and Kariana)
Great blog - fun to read the way you worded the humor...
