HAPPY ST. PARTRICK'S DAY!

We had an eventful evening last night and morning. We wanted to catch a leprechaun; those sneaky guys have candy and gold. Come on who wouldn't want someone like that? Aeriana was so excited!

We made a leprechaun trap to catch them. Glitter and all things green attract them. Didn't you know?



Aeriana so proud of her and Zoe's (but mostly her) creation.



The next morning we woke up to glitter everywhere and no leprechaun, but we must have scared him quite a bit, he dropped everything he was carrying. Poor guy.

All morning long all Aeriana could focus on was the huge mess the leprechaun made. Not that he turned our milk green (resulting in green eggs for breakfast) as well as our toilet water. No she was only concerned about the mess and wanted to clean it up. So that's exactly what we did. What kind of mother would i be if i said no to my child wanting to clean?





And of course after we were all done cleaning it was time to rest with a book.



You see this look... yeah I get the same one from Brett when I bother him when he's reading.



So lets review... loves presents and chocolate (just like Brett), can only focus on the mess (just like Brett), and when reading, which is often, do not disturb (I'm seeing a trend here). Is her being female the only genetic contribution i made? Oh well, maybe Zoe will be more like me.

Then again maybe not...

Brett and the Amazing Technicolor Tire Mist

We had a bit of snow last night and though it took me a while to get out of our parking lot, once I got on the roads everything was perfectly fine. The roads were wet, but not at all slippery.

At one point in my drive to work, heading down the highway at 65 mph, I looked ahead and noticed a rainbow. Behind a car. Then another rainbow behind another car, and then another. The timing of my drive (later than usual) was just right so that the angle of the sun was creating rainbows in the mist being kicked up from each car's tires. They didn't have the curvature that a typical rainbow does, but the colors were all there.

The technicolor tire mist accompanying the snow-blanketed landscape made for quite a beautiful drive into work today.

Xenocide

I just finished another book and, with the start of the next book in the series, I've now got 51 books so far this year that I've either read or am currently reading - whew! The book I just finished was somewhat unique in how it was both addictive and very 'heavy' at the same time. Typically it's the lighter books the suck me in (Hunger Games, Twilight, Harry Potter), while the heavier books are certainly enjoyable but don't make it as difficult to put the book down. Interestingly enough, I've even read this book before and liked it, but didn't love it; this time around I was just enthralled the whole way through.

If anyone has ever asked me about my favorite books, chances are I've mentioned Ender's Game. It's a fairly light story that's a lot of fun - technically it's science fiction, but I really think it's accessible even to non-sci/fi fans. The Ender storyline has a parallel called the Shadow series which follows one of the other characters from Ender's Game. While the Shadow series focuses more on action and political intrigue, the Speaker series (the series I'm currently reading) takes a more philosophical angle.

The direct sequel to Ender's Game is actually a new addition which fills in some holes previously left in Ender's life and is called Ender in Exile. Next in the series (originally the second book before Exile came out a couple years ago) is Speaker for the Dead, and the fourth book is the one I just finished - Xenocide. Today, as soon as I finished Xenocide, I started the last book in the series called Children of the Mind (supposedly there's another book coming out eventually to continue the storyline and merge the Speaker and Shadow series). I'm really excited right now about getting into Children of the Mind and getting to the end of this great series.

My Kids Have No Chance

At 2 1/2, I've already screwed Aeriana up. When she was littler (more little??? less old???) I would tell her I had a secret for her, bring her in close to hear a whisper, and the growl loudly and suddenly to scare her. She laughs when she's startled so it was great fun for all of us.

At this point though, Erin is regretting my actions (though I still think the result is funny). Now the exchange goes more like this:

Me: Hey, Aeriana you wanna hear a secret?
(Aeriana comes close)
Me (whispering): I love you.
Aeriana: That's not a secret!!!
(pause)
Me or Aeriana: ROAR!!!
Aeriana (laughing): That's a secret!!!

I really wonder how long it will take her to realize that a 'secret' is not a loud, startling growl. Oh well.


Now I've started on Zoe... this is way too much fun to not propagate.

Minute (or so) To Win It

This past Wednesday for our combined mutual activity we had an awesome game; my mom had asked for details but I thought I'd share with everyone in case there were others who might be interested. The entire premise of the activity was Minute to Win It - a show on NBC which is actually kind of fun to watch (if you can stand the annoying host).

The game show has a ton of different, silly tasks that people have to do in under 60 seconds. Think 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire", but instead of answering who was the 14th U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, you have to drop a quarter from 4 feet up, into a fish bowl full of water, and get it to land in the shot glass at the bottom of the fish bowl (sounds easier than it is - the water makes the quarter shoot off to the side). As soon as I heard about it I thought "I can picture these types of games happening at one of our family reunions."

Since we wanted to make the activity fun for all of the kids, not just one at a time, we tweaked the game a fair amount. To start with, we chose six games which were sometimes exactly like the game show versions, others were modified considerably. We broke the kids into five different teams of four kids each; we then had them race each other rather than the clock. The first team to finish got 5 points, the second got 4 points, etc. and any team that finished the task in under 60 seconds got a bonus point - but that actually only happened a couple of times.

One thing that actually made it a lot of fun was that I was able to get audio of the game show countdown timer, the game show music, and an airhorn to start the timer and notify the players when the first 60 seconds was up and their chance at a bonus point was over. If anyone ends up playing this game, I can send you the audio files to add a nice touch to the event - though you'll want some very loud speakers to play the sounds/music over since the games get the kids pretty riled up. Of course you'll want a handful of adults playing referee and a handful of adults getting whatever pictures/video they can - it's hilarious to watch.

As for the games:

"Hanky Panky" - Each team had two boxes of kleenexes and teams sub-divided into pairs; one of the teammates from each pair was required to hold the box down on a table while their partner raced to pull every kleenex out of the box using only one of their hands and only pulling one out at a time. The two players who had been holding the boxes down then had to pick up all of the kleenexes and get them to the garbage - we finally made cleaning up a game.

"Egg Roll" - Two players from each team participated at a time; we started everyone off at the half-court line with a hard-boiled egg and an empty pizza box for each person. Each player had to use the air from waving the pizza box to roll the egg across the court and onto a piece of paper we'd taped down at the baseline - both teammates had to get the egg on the piece of paper before they were done. At no point could they touch the egg with anything but the air from waving the pizza box. Once the first round was done, the other pair of teammates played in round two so that everyone could participate.

"This Blows" - Each team was given 19 plastic cups (because that's how many fit across the tables we used), several balloons, and two sets of chopsticks. Two of the teammates had to first take the stack of cups and line them up, face down, in the middle of their table; the other two teammates then had to use the air from the balloons to blow the cups off the table - nothing could touch the cups except the air coming out of the balloons. The original pair of teammates (who did not have the balloons) then had to use only the chopsticks to pick the cups off the ground and put them back on the table.

"On the Nose" - Each team was given 20 cotton balls, working together they had to transfer the cotton balls from a stack at one end of a table into a cup at the other end of the table. The cotton balls could only be touched with the player's nose, with vaseline acting to lift the cotton ball. Ideally the player has to shake the cotton ball off (too little vaseline and the ball won't stick; too much and it won't come off), but most players were ignoring rules at this point and just wiped their nose onto the edge of the cup - not nearly as funny to watch.

"Johnny Applestack" - Each team was given 4 red, ripe apples and they had to create a vertical stack using all four apples. The apple tower had to then remain standing for at least 3 seconds. Nothing but the apples could be used to make the tower.

"Face the Cookie" - This was our grand finale; everybody was given an oreo which they had to place on their forehead, then without touching the cookie with anything except their face, they had to wriggle the cookie down into their mouth. If the cookie fell they had to pick it up and start again.

We really had a great time with this game and I highly recommend it for mutual activities or family reunions. Check out the show's website for a complete list of all of the different games, just watching the "blueprints" on how the challenges are performed is a load of fun in and of themselves.

Apps We Like - Redux

With iPhone and iPad apps coming out constantly (~60,000 new/updated apps per month), and with specials happening frequently to make many of them free, I imagine that every week or so Erin or I will have a new app we're really excited about... In fact, since my post just a few days ago, Erin's already got a new one she found that seems to be a lot of fun - Shift.

So rather than finding myself posting a blog in six months titled "Apps We Like - Part 37", I decided to just add a short list of apps we're currently excited about to our blog, which we'll update whenever our excitement shifts. Just keep an eye to the right side of the screen, scroll on down past our pictures, and stop right before you get to our list of books we've read this year. Right now there are eight apps listed, this could easily change depending on our moods, but at least you've got something you can look at if that anti-feline inquisitiveness grabs you.

Of course, if you've got something that you happen to be excited about, just leave a comment on any blog post - even if it's not relevant. We love getting recommendations.


P.S. We can't wait to finally get iPhones next month and be rid of our lame LG Chocolates.

A: "Yeah!"
B: "We can't have cookies right now."
(Pause)
A: "Chocolate?"


At what point does the fact that Aeriana seems to be almost exactly like me start to become worrisome?

Apps We Like

My brother asked me for a list of apps for the iPad that we would recommend; I was part way through the email when I realized that there were probably others who might be interested as well.

We tend to gravitate toward free apps, and for many of the apps listed below we actually have the "lite" or "free" versions because we like the app but not enough to pay money to do more with it (we also will sometimes use the iPhone version rather than the iPad version of an app if it's cheaper - app purchases can add up quick). There are also a number of paid apps that we were able to get for free during a special discount period (using the three websites below); finally some are apps which Erin or I thought worth the cost and purchased the full version (I've added an asterisk before the ones we actually paid money for). We do have plenty of other apps, but these are our "recommended" ones; we also really like some of the native apps - but I don't think you'll need any help finding those.

Awesome Books!

My "Year of Books" is going along quite well. So far I've read, or listened to, 33 books and am in the middle of two more. I've still got the list of books (next to Erin's) on the right, towards the bottom, and I've rated/reviewed each book as I've gone along.

I wanted to post a little something extra though for a few books that I just had to recommend to any readers out there.

First (and second) is the Hunger Games trilogy (The Hunger Games and Catching Fire) by Suzanne Collins. Absolutely incredible books, and I can't wait for book 3, Mockingjay, to come out in August and finish the trilogy off. If you haven't read these books, do so.

Next is a fascinating book called Incarceron; the start of a new series, this book introduces you to a super-high-tech prison and its inmates. As you read through this book, you'll be surprised time and time again as new twists are revealed, it's a lot of fun.

And finally is a book that I just finished reading last night, The Maze Runner. Frustratingly, this is again the start of a brand new series - which means that you'll thoroughly enjoy the book... and then you'll have to wait a while for the next one. Lame. However, the book itself is not at all lame. If I were to explain the book, I'd do so by saying that it's an interesting mixture of The Hunger Games and Incarceron, which was coincidentally the order I read these books in (though it doesn't feel at all derivative - it definitely stands on its own).

Of these three series, The Hunger Games is definitely my favorite, though the other two were excellent as well - I highly recommend them all.

Still Playing 'Catch Up'

So I have officially been an epic failure when it comes to blogging. But I'm honestly going to try better ... again... And yes i realize i have said this before. Sorry... But I'm almost up to present time. :)


Aeriana and Zoe are the best of friends, and I love it. They play and giggle together all the time and Aeriana can always get Zoe to smile. I mean look how Zoe looks at Aeriana you can just tell she thinks Aeriana is the coolest.


We had a big snow storm and Brett got to work from home one day and they even closed the office the next day! It was awesome! The car was crazy stuck in the snow and we don't have a shovel, so Brett dug the car out with our ice scraper. Yeah... it took him forever. But then I made him hot chocolate to make him feel better. :)


This is a snow man that Aeriana and I had made a few hours prior, when it was only snowing a little...

My good friend Crystal lives right up the street from me, she took the kiddos out while I stayed inside with the babies. (She had a little girl (Lillie) two weeks after Zoe was born, and Rebekah her other daughter was a month after Aeriana. We like being prego together, what can we say.)


It's hard to tell in these two pictures but Aeriana was having a blast picking up the snow and throwing it in the air.


This is Zoe and Lillie chillin' inside. I love Zoe's face, it says, "Seriously, you licked me. I can't believe you just did that."


We have a baby that loves the bumbo. :) It's awesome! (Aeriana hated it.)

Zoe was super sick for about a month. It was so sad super high fevers and she had a horrible time breathing. She's all better now, but it took her forever!


One of Zoe's favorite things... Eating her giraffe and staring at herself in the mirror.


Speaking of giraffes, Aeriana has a giraffe too! And a pooh bear! And Bubblegum! And her Blanket! - all of which she wants to sleep with every night. I think she's going to be one of those kids with a million stuffed animals on her bed where you can't even see the bed, but they swear it's comfortable.


I tried to curl Aeriana's hair... It didn't work. I think she would have to sleep in the curlers over-night and there is no way they would stay in her hair with the way she sleeps (which is every which way). Any idea anyone?


We started doing a cousin exchange this year and Aeriana got her very first laptop from Evie. She loves it! At first she would walk up to it and say "No, no!" thinking it was mommy and daddy's laptop, but once she figured out it was hers she couldn't put it down.


Here's Zoe being the happy baby that she is... happy but loud, man this kid can make noise! Currently her favorite noise making technique is blowing raspberries. (and yes i know this toy got recalled... I sent it in, no need to send the parent police after me.) ;)


Aeriana loves to read and her favorite book is Dora! Well, she loves anything Dora really. She's obsessed!


But obsessions sure are handy when your friends come into town and you want to play games (yay Agricola!) and not be bothered by a two year old. :) Notice Aeriana in the background... yeah she's watching Dora.


And sometimes Dora is just great, but Aeriana has lots of energy and needs to move around a little while she watches... sometimes she decides to undress herself.


She's starting to realize that undressing, and attempting to get re-dressed, can be fun... and the results can be rather interesting.

Anatomy of an Early Morning Wardrobe Change:

Pants removed - check!
Diaper 90% removed - check!
Pants inside out - check!
Both legs stuffed into a single pant-leg of the pajamas - check!


This is Zoe's favorite position, she does this all the time and the picture just doesn't do it justice. She arches her back in this really weird way just so she can look around and see what she wants to. She tends to use this most often when Dora is on the TV; being placed on the floor facing directly away from the TV is no problem for a master contortionist.

I love the bed-head and I can hear Aeriana as a teenager saying "Mom what do you want from me, I just woke up?"



Aeriana got her first hair cut. It was much needed she was starting to look mullet-ish. And I would have none of that!


Pierson and Aeriana hand in hand at the mall. She loves to hold other kids' hands; it's so cute, we see her walking down the halls at church with one of her friends hand-in-hand all the time.


And last but not least! Happy birthday Brett!!! I love you!

Fun Photo Shoot

The other day I had the wonderful opportunity to take some pictures of a good friend and neighbor of ours (who is expecting a new baby just shortly after Erin) along with her incredible family. We had a really great time.

For me, especially, it was a great chance to get some practice taking pictures of people; I usually take shots of scenery or interesting objects... my 'people' experience is sadly limited. So I really enjoyed the chance to try some new things behind the camera, as well as try some new things in Photoshop.

Next I'm looking forward to getting a little more experience as I try to get some fun portraits of their two kids. Thanks Crystal and Joel for letting me practice on your family!

I Love My Wife

On Monday I left for a business trip to Cincinnati, I got home last night. While unpacking my things and talking to Erin, a trick of the light made her think for a moment that my little phone was actually an iPhone.

We've talked about how we both want to get iPhones, but we're waiting until our current contract is up with Verizon... it's just not worth paying the cancellation fee.

However, Erin's gut reaction to what she thought was my new iPhone was not anger or disappointment that I'd spent the money when we had decided together to wait... instead it was disbelief that I hadn't gotten her one too.

I love being married to a gadget nut, I am one lucky guy.

Figured Out

It still amazes us how much Aeriana understands and how quickly she learns. Today she proved that she's figured us out.

Each Sunday, on the way home from church, Erin and I try our best to keep Aeriana awake. It's usually around 1:30 that we're taking the 15 minute drive, and Aeriana is exhausted due to a combination of two hours of playing in Nursery as well as the time being well past her nap-time. Needless to say, we're not always successful in keeping Aeriana from her much desired sleep.

Generally I'll try to play with her by stealing her blanket, giving it back, and then stealing it again. That usually keeps her laughing for the drive, and thus happily awake. Sometimes Erin and I will get to talking about different things and before we know it, Aeriana will be passed out cold. At that point we try to wake her up quickly, stealing her blanket, calling her name, whatever it takes. However, sometimes she's out so cold that nothing wakes her up, at which point we just feel sorry for her, give her blanket back, and let her sleep.

That brings us to today's drive home. We were having fun with the blanket for a few minutes, but then Erin and I got to talking and when I looked back Aeriana was asleep. She wasn't sleeping too deeply, so her eyes popped open when her blanket disappeared... but then she showed just how much she's got us figured out. Instead of crying because she didn't like her blanket being stolen, or laughing because she thought it was funny, she just looked at both of us and then quickly clamped her eyes shut as tight as she could. Then she'd wait a few seconds and just peek out at us, notice we weren't buying it yet, and clamp her eyes shut again. You could tell she was just hoping her blanket would magically land back in her lap and she'd be left to her sweet dreams.

Once she'd done this a couple of times, Erin and I were laughing so loud that Aeriana couldn't restrain herself either. We laughed the rest of the way home, and being the ham that she is, Aeriana kept pretending to sleep just to make sure the laughing didn't stop.

Now all we have to do is figure out how to make her 'pretend' to be silent...

Note To Self

Note to self:

Next time you spend several days in the sun, do not forget that putting sunscreen on your arms, legs, feet, neck, face, ears, and even up into the receding hairline that makes you so darn sexy is just not enough. Oh no, please remember that even the hair on top of your head is thinning and your scalp will burn without sunscreen.

On second thought, maybe you should just wear a hat, shampooing your hair is not meant to be painful. :-/

Am I Alone On This?

Does this ever happen to you? You're driving in your car, listening to your music, and as you come to a turn it seems like your blinker is matching the beat of the song you're listening to?

No? It's just me? Eh, figures...

Well generally after several seconds the synchronization of the blinker and the music breaks and it becomes obvious that their timing is similar but nowhere near exact.

Except for the other day when I was listening to Time Stands Still by the All-American Rejects and it seemed that the tempo matched the timing of the blinker of our Chrysler Town and Country. And then, to my surprise, while sitting at the light for probably close to 20 seconds, it maintained perfect synchronization, right up until I turned the corner and the blinker shut off.

I drove on thinking how cool it was that the random timing of a song and blinker worked out so perfectly.


And then I thought "Man, I'm such a dork."

'Vacation' or 'Effort Reallocation'?

We've got a family reunion coming up and I've only got two days of work left before we leave. Unfortunately, taking vacation time doesn't always feel like vacation. Instead of getting six days off of work, I just cram as much in as I can before I go, and then scramble to catch up when I get back (and I know I'm not alone in this).

Of course, maybe my company is doing me a favor by letting me be truly grateful for my time away. Completely swamp me before and after, and the vacation just seems so much sweeter.





Then again, I really shouldn't complain. I have a good job that provides for my family, I enjoy what I do, I generally don't work too many more than 40 hours, and I live 10 minutes from the office. Things could be different. I could have no job, or one I hate, or one I have to work late at all the time, or one that I'd have to commute long distances...

Eh, I'm going to bed.

Finally, Italy

Things just haven't stopped since we got back from Italy, but finally I've been able to finish touching up our photos and uploading them to our Flickr account. Check out the full six sets of photos if you're interested (over 150 pictures in total), though I'll include the highlights here.

We started out in Baveno, a small tourist town on one of the northern lakes. The first few days looked like this:


Luckily things cleared up for our last day, when things started to look more like this:


We enjoyed a few hours out in the sun after my meetings got out early.


I absolutely loved the area, it was gorgeous, and while Erin grabbed some much needed naptime I took the chance to wander around and get some great pictures.





After Baveno, we went down to Milan for a few days. We enjoyed ourselves, but probably wouldn't recommend an extended stay there (interestingly enough the food in Baveno was spectacular while the food in Milan was only so-so). Amusingly after the Baveno shops being closed constantly because of the rain, we ended up being in Milan for May Day when EVERYTHING was closed. It was a little frustrating, but it allowed us to walk around and see the sites without too many crowds.

We saw the Teatro alla Scala, numerous parks, random beautiful buildings, as well as the Sforzesco castle.


Our favorite area, and where we spent the majority of our time, was in the Piazza del Duomo and the Duomo itself. The Duomo is the third largest church in the world and is absolutely gorgeous.

Of course, being away from Aeriana for so long was incredibly difficult. It made it a little easier knowing she was in such good hands with our best friends, but what made it even easier was the new Macbook we got just before we left, along with a webcam at home, so that we could talk to Aeriana. On one hand it made us miss her even more, but on the other it was just so much fun seeing her get all excited every time we popped up on the computer at home.



In the end we were thrilled to have gone, but more than ready to be home. We keep learning from ourselves that we're short-vacation people. More than a week from home and we're ready to be back in our own comfy bed. We loved Italy and look forward to one day making it back and seeing some other cities. For now though, we're glad to be home.
